T.M. Krishna's Sangeetha Kalanidhi award 2024 Sparks Controversy Among Carnatic Musicians

Ranjani-Gayatri and Harikatha exponent Dushyanth Sridhar recently made the decision to withdraw from the Music Academy Conference 2024 as a form of protest. This decision came after the Music Academy honored TM Krishna with the Sangita Kalanidhi award. Ranjani and Gayatri, in a public announcement, expressed their refusal to perform at the scheduled concert on December 25 and their withdrawal from participating in the Music Academy’s Conference due to TM Krishna’s involvement. They cited concerns about the damage they believe TM Krishna has caused to the Carnatic music world, as well as his alleged disrespect towards revered icons such as Tyagaraja and MS Subbulakshmi. Similarly, Dushyanth Sridhar conveyed his decision to withdraw from performing at the Conference, citing respect for his Gurus. Vocalist and Harikatha exponent Vishakha Hari also expressed reservations about the award recipient’s past actions. On the other hand, singer Chinmayi Sripada has voiced support for TM Krishna and raised questions regarding the stance taken by Ranjani and Gayatri. TM Krishna, on the other hand, shared a thank-you note after receiving the Sangita Kalanidhi for the year 2024. The Music Academy and TM Krishna have yet to publicly address this ongoing controversy.
